THE NATIONAL DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING (NDOH) GOVAN MBEKI AWARDS IN RECOGNITION OF CONTRIBUTION MADE TOWARDS ADDRESSING THE HOUSING NEEDS OF SOUTH AFRICANS IN THE HOUSING MARKET

The National Department of Housing announces the first Govan Mbeki Housing awards. The purpose of the awards is to motivate all stakeholders in the housing industry to harness human and other resources in accelerating housing delivery to improve the lives of millions of our poor by building sustainable human  settlements, providing a choice of quality housing opportunities with secure tenure and access to water and sanitation and social, economic and recreational facilities . 

 The Minister seeks  to honour the role players in the housing value chain, including developers, building contractors, the banking sector, community based organizations, the mining sector, building materials suppliers, professional associations that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making the millennium development goals achievable by 2014. 

The awards provide an opportunity for sharing information, lessons learnt, the strengthening of existing and the development of new partnerships and the replication of successful initiatives. 

Eligibility 

The closing date for submissions is 16 September 2006. Consideration will be given to submissions received from all signatories to the Social Contract. Signatories may nominate themselves or their colleagues. Civil society and non- governmental organizations are eligible with regard to categories that impact on their participation. 

Categories 

Awards will be presented in the following categories: 

• Successful partnerships with; 

• Material Suppliers
• The Banking Sector
• The Mining Sector
• The media

• The most innovative housing project

• Best Housing Institution of the year

• Best Municipality (from a human settlement perspective)

• Best Housing Official of the year

• Recognition of participating NGO’s and CBO’s in Sustainable Human Settlement; and

• Best Housing Savings Club.

Criteria for Selection 

Concept: The submission must relate to a project that has been successfully implemented. It must prove that it has exceeded what is considered norm. 

Impact: How this project is impacting on the Department’s goals of sustainable human settlement development and accelerating housing delivery. 

Sustainability: The medium to long term sustainability (social, economic and environmental) of the project must be clearly demonstrated.  

How to enter 

Simply download and fill in the nomination form and send to or drop it off at the National Department of Housing or any Provincial Housing Department. Submissions can also be e-mailed or mailed to the addresses provided below. Hand written submissions should be legible Supporting material may only be required at adjudication phase. All submissions received by end of business on 16 September 2006 will be acknowledged on receipt.  A list of Provincial offices is listed here.

Adjudication process 

The adjudicators’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The adjudicators retain the right to move a submission to a category they deem to be appropriate.
