When the South African government wanted to introduce a law in 1950 to force women to carry passes, they rebelled. It tried to introduce legislation again in 1952, and women resisted still, because they knew the adverse effect of pass laws on their sons, nephews, husbands and brothers. Men who did not have passes on them were arrested and even sent to potato farms to work as slaves. The first march was on 27
October 1955 and it attracted about 2,000 participants. The 9 August 1956
march to the Union Buildings organized by the African National Congress
attracted about 20,000 people and this year’s Women’s Build is a
commemoration of that march. Women’s Build partners have arranged a series
of activities to publicize what will be happening from 28 July – 06 August
2008. The women’s event is a build-up for the National Women in Housing
Indaba that will be held in Kimberley from the 07-08 August 2008.
