THE NATIONAL DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND THE NORTHERN CAPE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES THE ANNUAL WOMEN’S BUILD IN GALESHEWE, CHINA SQUARE, KIMBERLY, 28 JULY 2008

The National Department of Housing and the Northern Cape Housing Department will officially launch the 2008 Women’s Build under the theme “Entrenching Women’s Participation in Housing Delivery”, to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the women’s March to the Union Buildings on 09 August 1956 to protest against Apartheid pass laws.
Volunteers from the National Department of Housing, Provincial Housing, Sol Plaatjie Municipality, all housing institutions, SAWIC, the private sector and members of the community will build 52 houses in line with the national campaign to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the women’s march.
The build is aimed at raising awareness about the construction sector and women’s role in it as outlined in the construction charter, to showcase the partnerships between the public and private sector to create sustainable human settlements and the department’s determination to upgrade and formalise residential areas such as China Square.
